A 2019 comedy film, Housefull 4, is back in the spotlight, but not for its laugh-out-loud moments. A scene featuring Bobby Deol and Kirti Kharbanda has reignited a critical firestorm on Instagram for its insensitive portrayal of sexual assault. The line in question, “Main abla hun, tabla nahi,” spoken by Kharbanda’s character to Deol’s, is trending again, but not for its intended comedic effect.
This particular Instagram reel highlighting the scene isn’t garnering laughs – it’s sparking outrage. Users are critiquing the dialogue for trivializing sexual assault by playing on the tired trope of a woman’s supposed “weakness” as a punchline. The joke hinges on the harmful stereotype of women as vulnerable and easily persuaded, reinforcing the damaging misconception that victims invite assault by not being “strong” enough.
This isn’t the first time Bollywood has faced criticism for insensitive portrayals of sexual assault. However, with a growing awareness of sexual violence in India, viewers are no longer tolerating such jokes.
